Year 3&4 2016-2017

Please find below the summer home learning for the new year 3 and 4 children.

We hope they enjoy this and that you all have a wonderful Summer holiday.

Spring 1 2017

Powering Our Planet

 

Our new topic is called ‘Powering Our Planet’. We will be finding out about what energy is, the different sources of energy that we use and how sources of energy have changed linked to the use of more renewable energy.

 

Science

 

In science we will be learning about electricity. The children will be building circuits, making predictions about whether different circuits will work and learning about switches which will lead on to the children designing their own bedroom light.

 

 

Other areas of learning

In computing we will be continuing our learning all about computer programming and then moving onto multimedia and word processing.

 

 

In art and design, we will be designing and making our own bedroom light linked to our electricity topic.

 

RE for year 3 and 4 will be all about ‘Creation and Green Issues’.

PSHCE will focus on Managing Risks’ and learning how to stay safe in different situations.

Year 3 PE will be outdoor on Wednesdays and indoor on Fridays.

 

For year 4, outdoor PE will be on Monday’s and indoor PE will be on Thursdays.

In P.E we shall be taking part in tennis and netball and be learning the skills to play a game effectively.

Please ensure that the children have suitable kit, including a jumper, ready for the colder months.

Class 4JG alongside the year 4 children from class 4RS who haven’t yet been swimming, will start their block of swimming on 9th January 2017.

 

 

 

Year 3 English

 

Both year 3 and 4 are starting the term reading the book ‘Fly, Eagle, Fly’ which is an African tale and then doing writing related to the story.

 

Year 3 will be writing instructions, looking again at the texts we have already read. Then we will end the term writing explanation texts.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year.

 

Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

 

Both year 3 and 4 are starting the term reading the book ‘Fly, Eagle, Fly’ which is an African tale and then doing writing related to the story.

 

Year 4 will then be completing their narrative learning on the text ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzmann. After that, they will be writing diary extracts linked to the same book. We will end the term by doing a film and book review presentation.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year.

 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths and Year 4 Maths

 

Year 4 will begin by completing their learning on multiplication and division before moving onto subtraction. We will then move onto our unit of work on fractions.

 

Year 3 will also be completing their learning on multiplication and division before moving onto fractions.

 

 

Remember your child can play Sumdog and use My Maths to improve their maths skills.

 

It is also crucial that the children learn their times tables and can recall them quickly so please ensure you practise these regularly at home to support the learning of them that we are doing in school.

 

Mathsframe is a good website with a number of free interactive maths games linked to the national curriculum objectives.

Autumn 2 2016

 

Rotten Romans

 

Our new topic is ‘The Rotten Romans’. We will be finding out about: who the Romans were, Julius Caesar’s attempted invasion, the Roman Empire and the impact of Roman occupation on Britain and Leicester.

 

We will be holding a Romans day half way through the term so please make sure your child as a Roman outfit ready! We will confirm a date for this as soon as it has been decided. 

 

 

   Science

 

In science, we will be continuing our learning on changing state and taking part in some further investigations, which will focus on how to write up an investigation.

 

 

Other areas of learning

In computing, we shall begin our new computer science unit. We will be looking at a computer coding program called Kodu, which allows the children to make their own games.  

 

In art and design, we will be creating a class collage using cross stitch techniques and different fabrics linked to our Romans topic as well as creating some mosaics.

 

In music we will be learning to play the recorder and understand music notation. We will also be comparing different genres of music through the elements of music and creating a music time line. 

RE for year 3 and 4 will be all about the deeper meanings of our celebrations linked to Hinduism and visiting a Hindu temple.

PSHCE will focus on ‘Anti-Bullying’.

 Year 3 PE will be outdoor on Wednesdays and indoor on Fridays.

 

For year 4, outdoor PE will be on Monday’s and indoor PE will be on Thursdays.

The children will be taking part in dance and fitness sessions for indoor PE and orienteering for outdoor PE.

Please ensure that the children have suitable kit, including a jumper, ready for the colder months.

 

Year 4 PE will be swimming on Mondays for 4EC and half of the year 4 children in 4RS.

 

Year 3 English

 

In English, we will be looking at information texts information texts and suspense stories.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year.

 

Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

 

In English, we will be looking at information texts and producing a leaflet all about fire safety linked to Bonfire Night. We will then move onto some poetry learning, which will be followed by some more narrative writing linked to the theme of overcoming a monster.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year. 

 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths and Year 4 Maths

 

Both Year 3 and 4’s learning in maths will focus on learning how to use the four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will build on their learning from the previous year which will help them learn and then master new skills in relation to this area of maths learning.

 

Remember your child can play Sumdog to improve their mental maths.

 

It is also crucial that the children learn their times tables and can recall them quickly so please ensure you practise these regularly at home to support the learning of them that we are doing in school.

Nature’s Giants

Our project work this half term is all about mountains and volcanoes. We will be learning about the geography of mountains and volcanoes and using atlases and maps to identify the locations of them. We are also organising a trip to the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre where the children will be able to take part in different rock climbing and abseiling activities. 

 

   Science

In science we will be learning about changing states. Initially, we will be looking at what solids, liquids and gases are and their similarities and differences. We will also be grouping materials using the criterion of solids, liquids and gases, and then looking at how a state can be changed by adding heat or cooling it down.

 

 

Other areas of learning

In computing, we will focus on E-Safety. This will include learning all about different forms of social media platforms e.g. Instagram, Facebook that can be accessed through a range of media devices. Although, children have to be aged 13 or over to be part of these platforms, many are not; neither are they aware of the potential safety issues regarding their usage, which we will be highlighting to them.

 

In art, we will be creating some mixed media collages of landscapes linked to environmental artists.

 

In music we will be we will be creating sounds and pieces of music linked to our learning all about mountains and volcanoes.

 

RE for year 3 and 4 will be about ‘What does light/ darkness mean?’ and

Judaism.

  

PSHCE is going to be about ‘Myself and My Relationships’, which fits in well with the start of the new school year.

 

 Year 3 PE will be outdoor on Wednesdays and indoor on Fridays.

 

For year 4, outdoor PE will be on Monday’s and indoor PE will be on Thursdays.  

Year 4 PE will be swimming on Mondays for 4EC and half of the year 4 children in 4RS.

The children in year 3 and 4 will be creating dance inspired by volcanoes linked to our topic. They will also be taking part in football sessions for outdoor PE. Please ensure that the children have suitable kit, including a jumper, ready for the colder months.

 

Year 3 English

Year 3 will focus this year on suspense or scary stories when learning about narrative and will begin the year reading and writing about the brilliant book ‘Leon and the Place Between’ by Graham Baker-Smith. They will then move onto some non-fiction learning in the form of an information report. The children will end the term by finding out about the poet Micheal Rosen and learning to recite his poetry.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year.

 

Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

Year 4 will focus this year on the idea of overcoming a monster when learning about narrative and will begin the year reading and writing about the superb book ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy. They will then move onto some non-fiction learning in the form of an information leaflet. The children will end the term by finding out about the poet Roger McGough and learning to recite his poetry.

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year. 

 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths and Year 4 Maths

 

Both Year 3 and 4’s learning in maths will focus on their understanding of number and

place value for the whole of this half term. They will build on their learning from the previous year which will help them learn and then master new skills in relation to this area of maths learning.
