Year 3&4 2015-2016

Summer 1 2016

 

Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings

Our project learning this half term will be all about ‘Anglo-Saxons and Vikings’. Initially, we will explore where the Vikings came from and learn about how and why they invaded Britain. We will then move onto looking at how some kings dealt with Viking invaders, why Danegeld was introduced and how the Anglo-Saxon legal system worked. Lastly, we will investigate place names and village life in Anglo-Saxon Britain. We are hoping to have some ‘Vicious Vikings’ come into school to bring the topic to life!

 

   Science

We will be learning about ‘Magnets and Forces’. To start with, we will find out about the different types of forces and then move onto looking at magnets and friction. We will be focusing on different scientific skills including making predictions, as well as planning and then evaluating a fair test.

 

Other areas of learning

In computing, we will focus on communication and collaboration: Messaging and Publishing. We will be looking in detail at the different types of communication available to use and then move onto learning how to use emails to communicate to others. We are hoping to start a blog on the school website in which the children can add weekly reflections and show off their learning. Keep your eyes peeled on the website for further information.

 

In art, we will be doing some 3d modelling with clay. We will look at look at some existing ideas and then plan and make our own Viking warrior out of clay.

 

In music we will be continuing to explore how different animals are represented by music. On Friday afternoons, year 3 and 4 will have a singing session in the main hall which will supplement their regular music lessons.

 

RE for year 3 will be ‘How is new life welcomed into the world?’, whilst year 4 will be learning about ‘What are the deeper meanings of our celebrations?’ and Buddhism ready for our Buddhist assembly. We will also be visiting a Buddhist centre in preparation for this.

 

PSHCE will focus on relationships, looking mainly at emotions, self-esteem, the human lifecycle, relationships, and rights and responsibilities.

 

Year 3 and 4 PE we will be doing gymnastics indoor and start some athletics for outdoor PE, in preparation for sports day in Summer term 2.

 

Year 3 English

Year 3 will begin the term by reading some narrative based around the theme of suspense. They will learn to write stories and build up suspense within these. After that, they will move onto some poetry learning concentrating on free verse in the form of Haikus.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year.

 

Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

Miss Brierley’s group will be completing their learning on information texts which will result in the children writing a magazine article all about the school’s new wildlife garden. Then we will be learning some free verse poetry, which will be followed by some narrative reading and writing based on the theme of overcoming a monster.

 

Mrs Smith’s group will be learning some free verse poetry and then be doing some narrative reading and writing based on the theme of overcoming a monster.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year. 

 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths

In Summer 1, the children will be learning all about angles and shapes followed by length, weight and volume. 

 

Year 4 Maths

In Summer 1, we will begin by recapping calculation methods with both whole numbers and decimals. This will be followed by learning all about coordinates, shape and symmetry.

 

Remember to remind your child that they can play Sumdog to improve their mental maths. Your child should have received their username and log in details from their class teacher.

 

It is also crucial that the children learn their times tables and can recall them quickly so please ensure you practise these regularly at home to support the learning of them that we are doing in school.

 

Spring 2 2016

 

Land Use and Settlements

During the second half of the Spring term, years 3 & 4 will continue to learn all about ‘Land Use and Settlements’, which is a geography based piece of learning. This half term, we will focus on what the term ‘settlement’ means and what features would attract settlers to a particular area. We will also be looking at factors that would cause a settlement to grow or decline.

 

 

   Science

 In science, we will be complete our learning on ‘Rocks and Soils’. We will then move onto learning about ‘Magnets and Forces’. To start with, we will find out about the different types of forces and then move onto looking at magnets and friction. This learning will continue into Summer term 1.

 

 

 

Other areas of learning

In computing, we will finish our learning on creating multimedia documents and word processing in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

We will then learn all about digital media through music and sound.

 

On Friday afternoons, year 3 and 4 will have a singing session in the main hall which will supplement their regular music lessons.

 

RE for year 3 will be Hinduism and then they will move onto learning about Easter, ready for their Easter assembly on Wednesday 23rdMarch, whilst year 4 will be learning about What are the deeper meanings of our celebrations?’

 

PSHCE will focus on keeping safe in different contexts.

 

 Year 3 and 4 PE will continue to take the form of tennis for our outdoor sessions and netball for indoor PE.

 

Swimming block 2 will finish on Monday 21st March 2016.

 

 

Year 3 English

To start with, Mrs Rowe and Mrs Beighton’s group are continuing with learning linked to poetry and then moving onto writing formal and informal letters.

 

Mr Button’s group will be focusing on grammar concepts initially and then move onto writing formal and informal letters.

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year.

 

Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

In English, Miss Brierley’s group will continue to learn about non-fiction writing through the book ‘The Wonder Garden’. There will be a big focus this term on sentence writing and the use of basic punctuation.

 

Mrs Smith’s group are starting some fiction learning based on ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ book where they will learn to write using tension and suspense.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year. 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths

In Spring term 2, in Maths, we will be learning about shape, fractions and problems involving addition and subtraction.

 

Year 4 Maths

In Spring term 2, we will continue our learning on fractions and decimals and the move onto solving problems and challenges involving addition and subtraction.

Spring 1 2016

 

Land Use and Settlements

 

During the first half of the Spring term, years 3 & 4 will be learning all about ‘Land Use and Settlements’, which is a geography based piece of learning. We will be finding out about what the term ‘land use’ means and how the land use in Leicestershire has changed over time.  We will also be considering how the land use in Leicester might change over the coming years.  After the February half term we will be continuing this topic, focusing on the theme of ‘settlements’.

 

   Science

 

 In science, we will be learning about ‘Rocks and Soils’. We will be comparing different rocks based on their appearance, grouping them based on their properties and discovering how different types of rocks are formed. We will also find out how soil is made and be carrying out scientific investigations.

 

On Wednesday 6th January 2016, we will be having a visit from Jules Howard, who is a freelance zoologist. He will be holding a workshop for each class all about fossils and dinosaurs linked to our rocks and soils learning in science. We are very much looking forward to his visit!

 

Other areas of learning

 

In computing, we will be focusing on creating multimedia documents and word processing in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

 

In design technology, we will be learning all about the process of designing and making packaging for different products.

 

On Friday afternoons, year 3 and 4 will have a singing session in the main hall which will supplement their regular music lessons.

 

 RE for year 3 will be all about birth and naming ceremonies in different religions, whilst year 4 will be learning about ‘Values’ and what matters most.

PSHCE will focus on relationships and emotions.

 Year 3 and 4 PE will take the form of tennis for our outdoor sessions and netball for indoor PE.

 

Year 3 English

 

To start with, year 3 will be finishing their learning all about myths and legends. This will be followed up by instruction writing which is to include precise nouns, verbs and adverbs. Lastly, we will look at poetry, looking at similes and metaphors.

 

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year.

Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

Initially, Miss Brierley’s group will continue with their learning based around the book ‘The Lost Happy Endings’, whilst Mrs Smith’s group will complete their learning on newspaper recounts. After that, we will be exploring form through poetry. To end the term, we will be starting our historical stories learning.

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genres throughout the year. 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths

In Spring term 1, we will be learning all about division and fractions. We will then move on to solving problems involving addition and subtraction.

 

 

Year 4 Maths

In Spring term 2, we will be learning about fractions and decimals; area and perimeter and solving problems involving addition and subtraction.

Autumn Term 2 2015

 

Stone Age to Iron Age

 

During the Autumn Term (2), years 3 & 4 will be learning all about the Stone Age to Iron Age period in history. We will be using timelines to identify when in history the Stone Age to Iron age occurred, what humans needed to do in order to survive during that period of time, find out about the archaeological sites Skara Brae and Stonehenge and identify the changes that occurred through to the Iron Age.

We will have a Stone Age to Iron Age launch day on Friday 6thNovember 2015, so please get your costumes ready!!

There will then be a visiting workshop on 24th, 25th and the afternoon of the 26th November on the Stone Age to Iron Age. Each class will have half a day’s workshop where they will learn about archaeology and excavations and technologies from that time in history.  

 

    Science

 In science, we will be continuing to explore humans and animals but this time with a focus on skeletons and muscles. We will be finding out about different types of skeletons and bones that make up a skeleton. Then we will explore the three main purposes that a skeleton has before learning about the job of the muscles and how they work within our bodies.

 

Other areas of learning

Computing will be the Kodu programming unit.

Cooking will take place this half term and the children will get the chance to make baked spaghetti following the progression in skills model for cooking. We will also be doing some cooking on our Stone Age to Iron Age launch day, when we make some stewed fruit.

In art we will be analysing cave paintings and the stories behind them. Then we will sketch some cave paintings and annotate our learning before moving onto creating our own cave paintings. Lastly, we will evaluate our creations!

On Friday afternoons, Year 3 and 4 will have a singing session in the main hall which will supplement their regular music lessons.

 RE for year 3 is ‘What does it mean to be a Sikh?’, whilst year 4 will be learning about ‘Creation and Green Issues’.

PSHCE will focus anti-bullying during our enrichment week and 'Diversity and Community'.

 Year 3 and 4 PE will be dance based on the Stone Age and orienteering using our outdoor areas.

 

Year 3 English

To start with, the children will be learning all about performance poetry. This will be followed up by some fiction learning based on myths and legends. Lastly, the children will be doing some non-fiction writing linked to instructions.

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genre units throughout the year. Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

Initially, the children will complete their learning on creating images through poetry, which they started last half term. After that, we will start some non-fiction learning on newspaper recounts. To end the term, we will be doing some fiction reading and writing learning based around stories set in imaginary worlds.

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genre units throughout the year. 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths

In autumn term 2, we will be learning all about graphs, addition and subtraction up to 4 digits, followed by some learning on length and perimeter.

 

Year 4 Maths

In autumn term 2, we will be learning about multiplication and division, time and discrete and continuous data.

Autumn Term 1 2015

 

‘Bright Lights, Big Cities’ Topic.

 

During the Autumn Term (1), years 3 & 4 will be exploring the United Kingdom and finding out all about the cities and counties that make up our country. We will begin our learning by identifying what we already know about counties and cities and our mapping skills. The children will then use their mapping skills to read different maps and their symbols before learning how to draw a map of their local area. Then we will move onto comparing counties and cities  and looking at the similarities and differences between different areas e.g. Leicester City centre compared to rural Leicestershire. We are also hoping to go on some trips where they children can actually experience the differences between cities and counties. Keep your eyes peeled for more information!

 

    Science

 

We will be finding out fascinating facts about nutrition and developing a further understanding of what types of food are healthy and why we should eat a balanced diet. We will also be investigating the diets of different animals and the importance of plants. At some point in the term, a dietician will do a school visit to support the nutrition work we will be doing in school.

 

Other areas of learning

Computing - we start the term learning about 'E-safety' - a really important aspect of using the internet.

 

In art and design technology, we will be studying city centre architecture and then designing, building and evaluating our own model city centres with facilities for the public. There will be a focus on making the city as environmentally friendly as possible. This will link into our learning on UK cities and counties.

 

On Friday afternoons, Year 3 and 4 will have a singing session in the main hall which will supplement their regular music lessons.

 

RE for year 3 is ‘How does a Christian follow Jesus?’, whilst year 4 will be learning about ‘What does light/darkness mean?’

 

PSHCE will focus initially on class rules and expectations and then move on to learning all about living a healthy lifestyle.

 

Year 3 and 4 PE will be invasion games for outdoor PE and gymnastics for indoor PE.

 

Year 3 English

Initially, learning will focus on fiction writing based around the 'Stories set in a familiar setting' unit. The children will then begin a non-fiction unit all about report writing.

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genre units throughout the year. Spelling will be taught between 2 and 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 4 English

To start the term, learning will focus on fiction writing based around the 'Stories from other cultures' unit. The children will then be learning about different forms of poetry through the 'Creating Images' unit.

Different aspects of grammar and punctuation learning will be linked to the different genre units throughout the year. 

Spelling will be taught 2 or 3 times a week as part of English lessons.

 

Year 3 Maths

In Autumn term 1, the children will learn all about reasoning within numbers up to 100 . After that, the children will learn all about place value which will include the addition and subtraction of numbers.

 

Year 4 Maths

In Autumn term 1, our learning will focus on reasoning with 4 digit numbers. Then the children will learn how to solve addition and subtraction problems up to 4-digits.
