Here at Avenue, the staff and children are really proud of our Early Years Foundation Stage and love coming to school to learn. We hope you enjoy finding out about our Nursery and Reception classes. 

Our nursery class is called Caterpillar Class.  It offers both 15 and 30 hours provision. Children who stay for 15 hours will attend either each morning or afternoon.  After the October half-term, they will be eligible to stay for one full day each week.  You can register your child for our nursery on our website by selecting ‘parents’ and then ‘register for our nursery’. 

The 30 hours provision is free for parents who are eligible – check www.gov.uk to find out if you may be eligible.  Once your child is given a place in our nursery, you will be invited to attend some of our stay and play sessions which run during the academic year before your child is due to start.

Our Reception year has two classes – Dragonflies and Ladybirds. If you are a parent who is looking to choose a school for their child, you can book onto one of our parent tours, which usually run between November and January each year. In our EYFS setting, we follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, which sets out the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five.

Standards are set to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. Learning through play is a vital part of your child’s learning in Early Years. The teacher’s plan to support your child’s learning through a good balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning activities both indoors and outdoors.

There are seven areas of learning and development that must shape educational programmes in early years settings. All areas of learning and development are important and interconnected.

Three areas are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, forming relationships and thriving.

These are the prime areas:

• Communication and language

• Physical development

• Personal, social and emotional development

Providers must also support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.

The specific areas are:

• Literacy

• Mathematics

• Understanding the world

• Expressive arts and design

At the start of the reception year, teachers will complete a statutory baseline assessment with the children. Further information can be found here: LINK.

Throughout the year, all adults in your child's class will contribute to the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, building a picture of their development and progress. This will be shared with you in their summer report, providing an overview of your child’s progress towards their Early Learning Goals (ELGs).  The report will also be shared with their Year 1 teacher to support a smooth transition as your child moves into the next stage of their education. 

There will be opportunities throughout the year to talk about how your child is getting on, including at parents’ evenings. We will be happy to discuss their progress, celebrate their achievements and talk about any areas where they may need further support.
