Reading

Year 3

For reading this year, Year 3 will be using the same reading race tracks as they did in KS1. They will use these until the end of the Autumn term, at which point they will then move onto the AR system which is used throughout KS2. This is an online system where teachers can see how often children are reading and their understanding through the quizzes they are completing. During the first 2 weeks, children will complete a ZPD assessment. This is instead of the colour system which is used in KS1. It generates a reading range which is then used to select a reading book suitable for their reading level. At home, we encourage that children are reading for at least 20 minutes a day.

Year 4

In year 4, we will be monitoring children’s reading through the AR system instead of reading diaries. We will do this by checking how many quizzes children are completing weekly. We will still want children to be completing their quizzing in school but they don’t just have to quiz on their reading books, they can quiz on any book they have read. Ideally, depending on the length of their reading books, children should be ready to quiz at least once a week. At home, we encourage that children are reading for at least 20 minutes a day.
