Avenue Primary School

Where learning springs to life

Design Technology, Cooking & Growing

‘Design is not just what it looks like and feels like.

Design is how it works.’

Steve Jobs.

At Avenue Primary School, we offer a varied curriculum where the children have the opportunity to design and make products. This includes cooking, growing, textiles, mechanics and much more. Through these areas, the children are encouraged to identify, examine and solve practical problems and to make existing situations better. The children are encouraged to be inventive, using a range of materials and tools, thus developing, modifying and evaluating their ideas through a series of projects.

Over our two-year rolling curriculum, each area of design and technology is covered and linked to our geography or history topics. D&T projects can be taught over a series of lessons over several weeks or can be blocked over two or three days/afternoon sessions. During each project, the children are taken on a design and technology journey where the following areas are covered:

  • Introduction to project involving a design brief and purpose
  • Evaluation of existing products and looking at designers
  • Design process including equipment and materials needed
  • Learning and practicing new skills/making a prototype
  • Making a final product
  • Evaluating and improving product

Over the year, there are additional opportunities for the children to get involved in D & T projects such as during our Farmer’s Markets and our whole school Architects Day!

Avenue Farmer's Market

Every other year we have a fabulous Farmer's Market where the children sell produce or products they have grown, cooked or made!

Below are some photos of products made and sold by the children at our previous Farmer's Market which helped us raise money for school.
