Swimming at Avenue - the importance of learning to swim
Swimming
Here at Avenue we feel passionately that swimming is an essential skill that can save our life, and even the lives of others. Therefore, we are committed to ensuring all children can swim 25m by the end of year 6.
We cannot stress enough how important this skill is, so please join us in helping all children to learn to swim and raising standards overall.
We plan to take Year 4 for the full academic year and provide booster sessions during the summer term for those children in year 5 & 6 who are not yet able to swim 25m. This is to ensure that they are both water confident and can swim at least 25m using one stroke; but, we aim to have your child confident at all four strokes and if possible swimming further.
The first session for year 4 will be in the first full week back at school in the Autumn Term and the children will swim weekly for 37 weeks. During this session qualified swimming instructors provided by the swimming pool will assess your child and place them into the correct swimming group. Children tested who can swim 25m will be eligible to continue to attend the swimming lessons to improve their swimming skills further if space allows.
The lessons, which will be 30 minutes in length, will take place every Thursday during the school day. The children will be travelling by bus to Aylestone Leisure Centre swimming pool.
Kit required: swimming costume and towel.
Please note:
Shoulder length hair must be tied back.
No jewellery to be worn in school/to the pool (see additional letter attached)
Where stud earrings are worn these must be removed by parents before swimming
Inhalers must be taken to the swimming pool.
If your child needs to wear goggles for swimming there will be a consent form to complete.
(Children who have not completed and returned the goggles form will not be allowed to wear them.)
The children can bring a swimming cap if they are able to put it on themselves.
We require consent for the swimming lessons and you will receive a link to a form, which will need to be completed in order for you to give consent.
