  • Interventions for pupils with SEND

     

    At Avenue, we use ongoing assessment of our SEND provision.

    A whole school provision map shows the effectiveness of targeted interventions and these are reviewed by the SENCO and assessment lead (Deputy Head).

    We ensure that interventions target specific gaps in pupils' understanding of a subject/area of learning.

    Pupils who have been identified as needing physical intervention have a Positive Handling Plan in place which gives all staff working with them a detailed plan of how best to support the individual child. Examples of some of the support and provision we offer at Avenue are:

    Let’s Talk

    Specific intervention to develop communication development, including language and interaction.

    Drawing and Talking

    Individual and small group therapeutic intervention to allow pupils to express their feelings and emotions and develop strategies to support their emotional well-being.

    Big Moves

    Gross motor skills group intervention where children carry out a range of physical activities in order to promote better balance and co-ordination.

    Play Interaction

    A one-to-one or small group intervention that supports children with developing their social and interaction skills through play.

    South Warwickshire NHS Trust Fine Motor Skills Intervention

    Progressive fine motor skills and letter formation intervention. The aim is to improve pencil grip and handwriting through development of gross and fine motor skills activities.

    Fun Time

    Early years intervention focused on speaking and listening activities to promote social skills and self-esteem.

    Sofa Time

    Nursery intervention gives children time to work 1:1 with an adult and develop social skills.

    Emotional Literacy Support

    Two Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA) offer a range of provision and intervention to support children's social, emotional and mental health.

    Playdough Gym

    Fine motor skill development in the early years using a range of physical equipment and manipulatives.

    Let’s get physical

    Early years gross motor skills group intervention where children carry out a range of physical activities in order to promote better balance and co-ordination.

    Literacy booster group

    Small targeted group sessions working on initial sounds, CVC words, sentence structure. Targets are set by the class teacher.

    Phase 3 Phonics booster

    Revision and recap of phase 3 phonics sounds – segmenting and blending for reading and writing.

    Numicon

    A multisensory maths intervention using concrete apparatus to secure concept of number and calculation.

    Reading Crew

    Paired reading intervention between KS1 children and year 6 children to support comprehension and apply reading strategies.

    Precision Teaching

    Individual targeted intervention teaching the 100 high frequency words or number facts.

    1:1 Readers

    In class sessions for children who need extra reading time to practice applying skills learnt in guided reading and phonics.

    Lego Club

    Small group sessions to promote good social skills and friendship.

    Speed up

    A kinaesthetic programme to develop fluent handwriting.

    First class @ number

    A small group maths intervention that aims to help pupils catch up to age-related expectations.
