Where learning springs to life

Curriculum News

Autumn 1

During our first half term all the children will be looking at a whole school text 'The Mirror'.  We will be comparing the life of two boys, one living in Morocco and the other in Australia.  The children will write simple sentences and use adjectives to describe objects.  Continuing our diversity theme, all the children will then look at the text 'Lila and the secret of the rain. Year 1 children will create a simple re-tell and year 2 children will begin to change one element of the story and write their own.

In maths, we will spend the whole half term looking at place value.  For year 1, this will be looking at numbers up to 10/20 and for year 2 up to 100.

Our topic based work will be based on geography where the children will study where we live.  We will look at the human and physical features of the local area and make comparisons with living in Kenya.

Autumn 2

Our science topic we will be materials.  Year 1 will name everyday materials, look at properties of materials and sort them according to their properties.  Year 2 will consider how properties of materials make them suitable for different purposes and how the shape of solid materials can be changed.

In history we will study the lives of Mary Seacole and Edith Cavell.

For English, we will begin by looking at pirate stories and write a recount of our Pirate Day.  We will also look at the traditional tale ‘The Three Little pigs’ and write a letter.
